New Delhi, Dec 16: A Delhi court will deliver its verdict on January 8, 2024, in a case involving former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who faces charges related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The case pertains to the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Saraswati Vihar during the violence that followed the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who was scheduled to announce the verdict on December 18, deferred the pronouncement of the judgment. Kumar, who is currently imprisoned in Tihar Jail, appeared before the court via video conference.

The case, which was investigated by a special team after initial registration by the Punjabi Bagh police station, involves accusations that a mob attacked the house of Jaswant Singh, looted property, and set the house on fire, leading to the deaths of both father and son. The prosecution claims the violence was carried out to avenge the assassination of Indira Gandhi.

In 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, finding a “prima facie” case. The judge noted sufficient evidence to suggest that Kumar was not only involved but also played a leading role in directing the mob. The court had reserved its judgment after final arguments were concluded in November.
