India vs Bangladesh Chennai Test, day 2: Bumrah & Co. run through a hapless Bangladesh

The sun was out in all its sweaty glory and on the turf, Rohit Sharma’s men were adding their own streaks of luminosity. It was a Friday (September 20, 2024) largely well spent for India as the host tightened its grip on the first Test against Bangladesh here at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

At close on the second day, India scored 81 for three in its second innings and has an overall lead of 308. The host lost its skipper Rohit and fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal early but the cushion of a 227-run first-innings lead meant that there were no alarm bells.

An elegant Shubman Gill and a watchful Virat Kohli bided their time together. The former punching and pulling, the latter ever keen to tap and hustle between the two ends. Kohli fell to off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz even as replays later hinted at an inner-edge onto his pads. But once Rishabh Pant pulled and hoisted Miraz, India breathed easy.

Earlier, after India posted 376 in the first innings, Bangladesh’s reply initially was all about rattling timber as Jasprit Bumrah first and then Akash Deep remained hostile towards the stumps.

No clue

Shadman Islam shouldered arms to Bumrah while Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque fell off successive deliveries from Akash. In all three cases, the citadel was knocked down.

Even as Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto drove Bumrah and swept R. Ashwin, the visitor was nervously placed on 26 for three at lunch.

After the break, Najmul and Mushfiqur Rahim promised a revival before the Indian speedsters again stepped up.

Najmul edged Bumrah, Mushfiqur feathered one off Mohammed Siraj and Bangladesh struggled at 40 for five.

Well negotiated

Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das then forged an alliance that dealt well both with the pace threat and the spin duo of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

A 51-run sixth-wicket partnership chugged along when against the run of play, Litton chanced his arm against Jadeja and Shakib attacked the same bowler with a needless reverse sweep.

Catches were taken and just before tea, Bumrah scalped Hasan Mahmud leaving Bangladesh gasping at 112 for eight. Later, despite Miraz’s resistance, India bowled out its rival for 149.

In the morning, resuming at the overnight score of 339 for six, India stretched its first innings by a mere 11.2 overs and finished at 376 as Bangladesh utilised the new ball.

Interest was centred around whether Jadeja (86) would press ahead for his ton but Taskin Ahmed prised him out and the retreating batter got a warm pat from Ashwin.

The latter then watched Akash do his mix of defence and right shots, belying his tail-ender status.

Akash then perished in the deep, and a similar fate awaited Ashwin (113) before Bumrah became Hasan Mahmud’s fifth wicket. Considering the way India started on Thursday, this was a first innings which proved to be a remarkable salvage-operation thanks to the 199-run seventh-wicket partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja. These runs could hurt Bangladesh for the remainder of this game.
