Edu REJECTED desperate Arsenal offer to stay as true reason for leaving comes to light

Arsenal have confirmed the surprise exit of former sporting director Edu after a hugely successful spell but the North Londoners did everything they could to keep the Brazilian

Edu turned down a lucrative offer to TREBLE his wages to stay at Arsenal after sensationally quitting the club.

Arsenal have confirmed that their sporting director has left the club after a hugely successful five-year spell. The Brazilian returned to North London in 2019 as the club’s first-ever technical director.

And since then, he has played a pivotal role behind the scenes when it comes to transfers. Edu is now expected to pen a deal with Evangelos Marinakis’ multi-club ownership - and will represent Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

It has since been suggested that the Brazilian will treble his wages should he complete the move as expected. And Arsenal attempted to match that deal in a last-ditch effort to keep him at the Emirates.

According to MailOnline, the Gunners made a counter-offer similar to that tabled by Marinakis but the draw to work in a multiple-club model was too tempting to turn down. And Edu has since explained the thinking that went into his decision.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, he said: “This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history.

“It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they’ve given me. I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues across our men’s, women’s and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.

“Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal chief Josh Kroenke has explained how the Gunners intend to move on from his exit, but has not confirmed whether a replacement will be sought. He said: “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward. Everyone at the club wishes him well.

“We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone. Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.”

Arsenal get the post-Edu era underway on Wednesday as they take on Inter Milan in the Champions League. They then travel to Chelsea before the international break ahead of a potential reunion with Edu during the home clash with Forest at the end of the month.
