Liverpool news: Arne Slot handed injury blow as Mo Salah concern emerges
Liverpool face Southampton in the Premier League when action gets back underway this weekend and Arne Slot may yet have a further injury blow to deal with the clash
by Scott Trotter · The MirrorPremier League football is nearing it's return and Arne Slot will be hopeful that Liverpool can continue their impressive start.
The Reds top the Premier League and Champions League and will have to hit the ground running with Southampton and Real Madrid lying in wait over the next week. Slot's team will travel to St Mary's looking to at least maintain their five-point lead in the domestic division.
Liverpool's head coach will also hope his international stars return to the United Kingdom unscathed. The Reds have a number of players who must return from South America in the shape of Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.
There remains plenty to resolve at Anfield too, with Mo Salah, Trent Alexander and Virgil van Dijk's contracts to deal with. With that said, Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news stories.
Liverpool left sweating
Reds boss Arne Slot could have another injury problem to deal with ahead of the Premier League's return after Alexis Mac Allister limped away from Argentina's win over Peru. The midfielder was substituted following what was described as a 'tremendous kick' to Mac Allister's ankle from Carlos Zambrano.
The former Brighton star's late travel schedule would already leave Slot in a difficult position over his selection but with a knock also delivered to Mac Allister, the Dutchman could be left sweating over his involvment against Southampton. With Real Madrid soon to follow in the Champions League, risks are unlikely to be taken.
Mo Salah concern
Talks between Mohamed Salah and Liverpool have stalled according to the Times. The Egyptian is set to see his contract expire in the summer with the parties not seeing eye to eye over a new deal.
The veteran winger is said to want a three-year deal to commit his future, with the Reds reluctant to commit to so long on the same terms. Salah, 32, saw bids in excess of £100million arrive for him previously, with Liverpool potentially having to countenance walking away with nothing in 2025.
Salah's priority remains to stay at Anfield with Liverpool having to balance their resources and find a replacement for the ex-Chelsea ace whose time eventually has to come to an end.
Salah's successor?
Reports in Germany have claimed that it will be a fellow Egyptian that replaces Salah. Omar Marmoush has enjoyed a lightning start to 2024/25 and recorded 11 goals and seven assists in 10 Bundesliga matches for Eintracht Frankfurt.
That impressive record has alerted clubs around Europe to his talent with Liverpool more closely linked than most. In an interview with German outlet BILD, journalist Marcel Reif went as far as to say he would put money on a transfer being completed.
“It's no secret that he will probably move to Liverpool," said Reif. I would put a few euros on it next summer as the successor to his great idol Mo Salah.
