Champions League: Rio Ferdinand identifies PSG’s major problem after 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has identified Paris Saint-Germain’s major problem after their Champions League round of 16 second-leg 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid defeated PSG at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, thanks to Karim Benzema’s hat-trick.

Kylian Mbappe did score a goal for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, as Real Madrid qualified for the quarter-final on a 3-2 aggregate win, having lost 1-0 in the first-leg.

But Ferdinand believes PSG’s main problem after their defeat to Real Madrid has to do with ‘mentality’, adding that it is a culture at the French Ligue 1 giants.

“This is not something that is a surprise for us because we have seen it time and time again in the knockout stages of the Champions League,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“This Paris Saint-Germain team pressed the self-destruct button. They managed to do it for two of the goals today, which were preventable, two goals where they are overplaying and the goalkeeper starts it.”

“It’s the mentality I think and the culture at the club,” Ferdinand added.

“This isn’t something that is new at Paris Saint-Germain.

“They have got fantastic talent, world-class talent all over the pitch, internationals left right and centre. They can field 22 internationals. But when the mentality is not right on the day and you get into situations like this, sometimes you have got to stay in the game. It’s like a boxing match.

“Sometimes, you have got to roll with the punches a little bit, stay in the game, you have got wily old characters in your team, you have got enough experience there to do that, but they never ever manage to be able to do that.”
