Strong winds and heavy rains are set to sweep across the country as Met Éireann issued a nationwide Status Yellow wind and rain warning.

Forecasters warned that heavy rainfall tonight and tomorrow could turn wintry in places and will be accompanied by strong to near gale force and gusty southerly winds.

This could lead to hazardous driving conditions and localised flooding.

The warning is valid from 10pm tonight until 3pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow - Wind and Rain warning for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo was in operation until 3pm.

Met Éireann had warned that there would be strong to near gale force and gusty southeast to south winds this morning and this afternoon.

A Status Yellow heavy rainfall warning has also been issued for tonight and tomorrow, possibly turning wintry in places.

It will be accompanied by strong to near gale force and gusty southerly winds which will lead to hazardous driving conditions and localised flooding.
