How to Watch ‘Belfast’ and Hear Jamie Dornan’s Sweet Serenade

· Cosmopolitan

It’s finally time for the best season of the year. No, we’re not talking about summer, we’re talking about awards season. It’s been a great year for entertainment with the film industry’s post-pandemic comeback, and a lot of this year’s most anticipated releases did not disappoint. In fact, some have big Oscar buzz, including Belfast, which is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Sound, and Best Original Screenplay.

The movie is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story written and directed by none other than Kenneth Branagh. It follows a young boy growing up in Northern Ireland in the late ’60s, at the start of what is now called the Troubles—an ethno-nationalist conflict that went on for 30 years. The protagonist boy, played by newcomer Jude Hill, and his family navigate living through divisive times while trying to stay together. The film also stars Jamie Dornan, Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Ciarán Hinds, and Colin Morgan.

Critics are already calling it the Oscars front-runner, and it’s already won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s generated a lot of interest because of its cast (and there’s also the fact that Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie gets to show off his singing chops in the film).

IDK about you, but that sounds like a definite must-watch to me. So if you’re still scrambling to figure out how to watch Belfast, look no further! Here’s everything you need to know.

When does Belfast premiere?

This really depends on where you are in the world. The movie already came out in U.S. theaters on November 12, 2021. In the UK, it debuted in theaters on January 21, 2022.

Where can I watch Belfast?

For those who are comfortable with going back to IRL movie theaters, you can check out show times at the closest theaters and buy tickets on Fandango.

Can I watch Belfast at home?

Obviously, a lot of us would like the option to stay cozy and watch from the comfort of our own couches, and you can for a price. Belfast isn’t on any major streaming platforms as part of subscription packages just yet, but you can pay $5.99 to watch it on Vudu, Apple TV, YouTube, or Amazon Prime Video, so at least there’s that!

Is it going to be on Netflix? Hulu? HBO Max?

It’s unclear. The Belfast filmmakers haven’t announced whether the movie is going to be part of streaming service packages anytime soon. But hey, at least you can still watch it digitally (for a price) if you’re itching to see it before Oscars night!
