Not just China: EU wants South Korea, Singapore to help fund global climate efforts – POLITICO

BAKU, Azerbaijan — The European Union wants South Korea, Singapore and perhaps Brazil to contribute funds to help developing countries address climate change, one of the bloc’s lead negotiators told POLITICO. 

It’s the first time the EU has explicitly mentioned these countries as it pushes to expand the group of countries paying into a collective funding target to be agreed at this week’s United Nations climate conference, known as COP29. 

With trillions required to ensure developing countries can afford the measures needed to cut emissions and prepare for climate disasters, the current goal of $100 billion a year — which expires in 2025 — is widely considered insufficient.
