Elton John's friends 'seriously concerned' over his health as they make desperate plea
Sir Elton John's friends have raised concerns for the Grammy winner after he shared that he has 'lost' his eyesight after battling an intense eye infection over the summer
by Lillie Rohan · The MirrorSir Elton John 's friends have reportedly shared their concern about the musician's busy schedule amid his recent health battles.
The Grammy winner, 77, shocked fans earlier this week after announcing at the West End premiere of The Devil Wears Prada alongside his husband, David Furnish, that he was unable to watch the performance as his eyesight has significantly worsened following an eye infection over the summer.
Speaking at the theatre, he told fans: "I've lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage." He went on to say: "As some of you may know, I have had issues, and now I have lost my sight. I haven't been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it. To my husband, who's been my rock because I haven't been able to come to many of the previews... it's hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight, OK. Thank you for coming!" Sources have told the Mirror that following the performance, Sir Elton made sure to stay around and meet the cast and crew of the show.
Elton told fans about his eyesight battles in September, sharing on his social media that he was "healing" but that his recovery had been slowed down. He noted that the recovery process is "extremely slow" and added: "I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far."
Despite his health woes, the star has been jet-setting around the globe, with recent appearances in New York and London for the opening of his new musicals, Tammy Faye on Broadway and The Devil Wears Prada, causing concern among his friends.
"Elton's friends are seriously concerned about how much he has taken on and believe it is having a major impact on his health," an insider told The Sun. "Quite a few people who he is close to have now encouraged him to slow down because he has been busier than ever this year."
"He isn't getting any younger and his health has been deteriorating in the past few years." They added that the "point" of the star's farewell tour was that when it wrapped, he would reduce his work commitments, but it is still "intense" as ever and "something has to give".
Elton's eyesight isn't the only thing he has been struggling with; in recent years, he has also undergone two knee replacements and a hip replacement after he fell over in 2021 and was forced to delay his tour. It followed his diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes in the early 2000s.
The father of two 's changing health has resulted in a complete lifestyle evaluation, including watching what he eats so that his sugar levels don't reach high numbers. He told Lady Ruth Rogers' on Ruthie's Table 4 podcast that he hasn't had sweet treats for a "long time" and has substituted chocolate and ice cream for apples and melon.
"If I had a death row meal, it wouldn't contain anything except sweets because I can't eat them now. So, I'd have ice cream, donuts, apple pie, rhubarb crumble," he told the podcast host.
