Plans have been lodged to build nearly 300 new homes on the outskirts of Dumfries.

Social housing landlord Wheatley Homes South are pushing on with their plans to develop Catherinefield Farm at Heathhall after holding a number of public events.

It comes on the back of Wheatley completing work on 89 affordable homes in a £22.9 million development at the former Curries Yard depot nearby.

Papers lodged with the council show the new development would feature 296 houses.

There would be 234 affordable homes – 30 of them mid-market rent homes – as well as 30 private houses.

There would also be 32 homes for the over-55s as part of a Livingwell development – a first for Wheatley in the south of Scotland.

The planning statement said that social housing is “much needed” in Dumfries and Galloway and added: “This is a significant allocated housing site, and the design approach will take full advantage of the unique opportunities afforded by the site and to suggest a high quality, sustainable housing development that builds on the potential of the location, whilst accommodating all the needs of a new neighbourhood.

“The new homes will be set within a high quality place, which will promote local living, provide a well connected movement network and integrate new accessible open space within the existing mature landscape
setting.

“This development will encourage residents to live sustainably, with ease of habit.

“The contribution of green space to health and wellbeing alongside biodiversity is also of key importance.”
