Irvine will not have a formal Christmas light switch-on this year, owing to a lack of community volunteers.

However, the lights will go on across the town on Friday, November 29 after Irvine Community Council secured a donation from Ashleigh Construction to cover the cost of the annual display.

Due to ongoing North Ayrshire Council budget cuts, volunteer groups are now required to fund these costs.

Irvine Community council chairman, Chris Pless, said: “Unfortunately, due to additional costs and a lack of volunteers we're not running any official Christmas event/ light switch on event.

"Our funding just about covered the installation and maintenance of the lights themselves.

“This year the lights will be turned on from November 29 but there is no official switch ceremony on sadly. “

The lights will go on the same night a light parade is running from Cunninghame House to the Harbourside.
