The public toilets in the centre of Kilmaurs will be transformed into ‘pop-up shops’.

The toilets on Irvine Road are part of a conservation area, laying out strict rules about properties in the village.

A report from East Ayrhire Council planners states: “The proposed external alterations to the building include the closing up of one of the existing doors on the front elevation of the building (the door to the left side of the building) with the wall made up to match the existing finish of the building.

“The former public toilet is located within the safeguarded open space in the centre of Kilmaurs.

“It is located at the western end of this area and is bound to the side and rear by small bushes and trees.

“The wider open space is landscaped and well maintained. The building is currently vacant and is finished with a cream render and brown concrete roof tiles.”

The report stated: “The proposal will reuse an existing building within the town centre and conservation are with only minor external alterations.

“The proposed use is compatible with the surrounding town centre uses, and the alterations being minor will not affect the overall character and amenity of the conservation area.”

The application was approved with conditions around external rendering and paintwork to meet conservation requirements.
