Nearly 75 children and teachers of the Karunyatheeram Special School at Kattipara in Kozhikode district of Kerala who had been admitted at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam following a suspected case of food poisoning were discharged from the hospital on Thursday (November 28, 2024) morning.

The group was on a tour to Kochi and the team comprising children and teachers developed symptoms of food contamination, including vomiting and diarrhoea, around 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday. Of the total 104 members that included parents of the children, around 75 had sought medical care at the hospital. They were administered required treatment by the doctors and nursing staff.

The hospital authorities said those admitted were discharged on Thursday morning after their condition improved.

Source of contamination

The team members had informed the hospital authorities that they had consumed the food provided by the tour organisers while on a boat trip from Marine Drive. The butter milk served on the occasion had a “different” taste, they said.

It is learnt that the tour organisers had sourced the food from a catering unit.

The Ernakulam Central Police took the statement of those admitted at the hospital as part of the probe to identify the source of the food contamination.
