The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Thursday approved a slew of major changes in its policy for the redevelopment of slums under its ‘Jahan Jhuggi, Wahin Makan’ scheme, giving a boost to the in-situ rehabilitation of their residents.

The changes were approved at a meeting chaired by Delhi Lieutenant-Govenor V.K. Saxena, who is the chairperson of the authority that comes under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The move came a day after Mr. Saxena ordered the DDA to dispose of within a month pending applications for the registration of properties in unauthorised colonies under the Centre’s flagship Pradhan Mantri — Unauthorised Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojana (PM-UDAY).

The in-situ rehabilitation aims at accommodating slum dwellers at the place of their current location.

According to officials, the modification in the policy will ensure more number of dwelling units for slum dwellers and additional commercial spaces to make redevelopment projects financially viable for developers.

A statement issued by the civic agency said the changes in terms of density relaxation, revised apportionment of land area for remunerative and non-remunerative components, floor area ratio (FAR), clubbing of clusters for redevelopment spread across a radius of 5 km etc. were approved at the meeting.

Centre to notify rules

At least 40% of the total plot area at the slums will now be utilised for residential purposes while the remaining can be used for remunerative and commercial purposes, it added.

The changes cleared at the meeting will now be sent to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which will issue a notification in this regard.
