Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl could be set to leave the Owls.

Derby County rivals could lose boss in another Championship managerial twist

Derby County's Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday could see Danny Rohl quit for Southampton amid a fresh update over his future.

The Premier League side have reportedly made Rohl their number one target to replace Russell Martin who was sacked after a shocking 5-0 defeat at home to Spurs. Wednesday are keen to cling on to Rohl, but they are becoming increasingly resigned to losing the German who signed a new contract in the summer.

Now, according to Teamtalk, Southampton wants to make him their manager "immediately," with Rohl reportedly keen on making a move to the coast. But Southampton could face competition from RB Salzburg, which sacked former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders.

Either way, Derby could travel to Sheffield Wednesday without Rohl in the dugout, with the two clubs set to face each other at Hillsborough on New Year's Day.

Derby only played Wednesday recently at Pride Park, where Paul Warne's side were unlucky to lose 2-1. Having dominated a large proportion of the game, they succumbed to a stoppage-time winner from Jamal Lowe.

News of Rohl's potential departure comes when the Championship has seen the most managerial changes out of any division in England.

Mark Robins was sacked by Coventry, Tim Walter was axed by Hull City, Oxford parted company with Des Buckingham and Stoke City's Narcis Pelach and Plymouth's Wayne Rooney are under immense pressure. Neil Harris has also left Millwall on his own steam while Cardiff City sacked Erol Bulut earlier in the season.
