‘The Substance’ Does Equal to ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ on PVOD, but ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Is Bigger

Led by "Time Cut," four Netflix originals rank in their top six movies.

Warner Bros.’ woes with “Joker: Folie à Deux” continue with a weak debut on PVOD. The disastrous around $300 million investment for them left theaters after four weeks with under $60 million in domestic gross. Now, it is falling flat in initial PVOD response.

It placed fourth on both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (revenue-counting) after its release last Tuesday. “The Substance” (MUBI), released on Thursday (and also streaming at their site for subscribers), is third at iTunes, sixth at Fandango (whose chart is for the full week, with “Folie” having a two day advantage.

That’s a big bounty for the far less expensive Cannes Film Festival-premiered horror film, which has amassed a decent nearly $16 million in theaters so far. MUBI is offering it for sale at $19.99, while WB has “Folie” as a rental for the same price. Both companies recoup 80 percent of that cost after a small carriage fee.

Meantime, it wasn’t all bad news for Warners. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” returned to #1 at both sites in its fourth week of home release, still renting for $19.99. That’s while the film continues to push towards a possible $300 million domestic gross and still in the box office top 10 in its ninth week.

Netflix originals, three of them new this week, lead their top 10 including their top three slots. “Time Cut,” a time-travel horror film (a high school student goes back to 2003 to prevent her sister’s murder), debuts at #1.

Their “Don’t Move,” another female-centered genre original which led last week is second. “Martha,” their documentary on multimedia lifestyle celebrity Martha Stewart, directed by R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue”) is third. Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour,” #1 before that, is #6.

A curious addition, not an original but little seen is at #7. “Fall into Winter,” Lori Loughlin’s first film since her release from prison on related to college admission bribery charges was shown on the Great America Family cable network last year.

On PVOD, Disney reduced the rental price on “Deadpool & Wolverine” to $19.99, and saw it take second spot on both lists. Other than “The Substance,” no other new releases made either Top 10 list. That includes “The Apprentice” (Briarcliff) and “Piece by Piece” (Focus), both out after three weeks (they grossed about $10 million and $4 million respectively).
