Special darshan organised for sanitation workers
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduA special darshan was arranged for around 4,000 sanitation workers at Arunachaleswara temple on Tuesday for removing over 350 tonnes of wastes generated on Maha Deepam day.
Tiruvannamalai Collector D. Bhaskara Pandian, along with Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department officials and Corporation Commissioner M. Gandhiraj, led the civic workers through the temple.
Over 1,100 of the 4,000 workers belong to Tiruvannamalai Corporation while the rest were roped in from 21 municipalities, Salem Corporation and District Rural Development Agency (Tiruvannamalai).
“Sanitation workers worked round-the-clock in three shifts to clean-up the town. The move is to honour their selfless work,” Mr. Gandhiraj told The Hindu.
This year recorded the highest amount of garbage generated on the day as against 2023 (210 tonnes) and 2022 (130 tonnes), due to the increase in footfall — around 40-45 lakh pilgrims.
The wastes collected were dumped at the 15 acre-landfill near the Girivalam path and food wastes were recycled.
